On the occasion of the 200th birthday of Johann Strauss Sohn (1825–1899) in 2025, the Theater Museum, in cooperation with the Vienna Library in the Town Hall, is dedicating its large annual exhibition to the eventful life and work of the world-famous composer from December 4, 2024.
Johann Strauss was a superstar of his time who thrilled his audience with his artistic work – from dance music to sophisticated concert music to his stage works. Extensive tours took him throughout Europe and halfway around the world to the USA.
Celebrating Johann Strauss In addition to original objects from the extensive holdings of the Theater Museum, it also shows exhibits from the Strauss collection of the Vienna Library in the Town Hall, which, due to its unique significance, has found its way into UNESCO’s “Memory of Humanity” register. The original score of the operetta is a special highlight The bat and a copy of the extremely rare first edition of “Walzer für die Welt” At The Beautiful Blue Danube to name. Loans from the Vienna Museum and well-known institutions illustrate theater-historical, political and economic connections. Strauss’ strenuous lifestyle is examined, as is his relationship with his parents, brothers, three wives and love affairs.
The exhibition is a collaboration between the Theater Museum and the Vienna Library in the Town Hall as part of Johann Strauss 2025 Vienna.
The show is from December 4, 2024 to June 23, 2025 in the Theater Museum to see.
