Dementia is the most common cause of need for care and nursing home admissions in Austria. Two thirds of nursing home residents are affected, which puts a lot of strain on nursing staff and relatives. The lack of care and rising costs are making the situation even worse. Without political measures, the situation will worsen dramatically: the number of those affected will double by 2050, while at the same time the number of caring relatives will decrease.
Up to 45% of dementia cases could be avoided through preventative measures and early diagnosis. Political decisions are urgently needed to expand prevention and early detection and to promote new drug therapies. This would not only relieve the burden on the healthcare system, but also significantly improve the quality of life of those affected.
The event highlights the most pressing challenges:
- How can political decisions reduce the overload of the care system?
- What potential does prevention offer?
- What steps are necessary to strengthen health promotion and early detection?
