Finally ensure full protection for the trans community!
Vienna (OTS) –

Year after year, the Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20th stands for the widespread remembrance of the victims of transphobic violence. Especially in view of the current culture war campaign by right-wing and right-wing extremist groups against trans* people, hate crimes and crimes against this group have increased massively in recent years. As figures published today show, the European human rights organization TGEU counts more than 350 murders of trans* people in Europe in the last twelve months alone and warns of an increase in violence and discrimination in everyday life and private life. In Austria in particular, as interest groups warn, the number of unreported hate crimes against trans* people is particularly high. For the social democratic LGBTIQ+ organization SoHo, one thing is clear: “While the FPÖ and its fans on the right-wing fringe are conducting an increasingly strong culture war in the style of Trump and AfD and, above all, are making trans* young people the targets of their polemics, we need sensible forces in ours Society to stand up for what is really important: self-determination, security and a fear-free life for ALL people – regardless of their gender and gender identity,” emphasizes SoHo Trans* spokeswoman Dominique Mras together with the SoHo federal chairman and SPÖ equal treatment spokesman Mario Lindner. ****

Mras, as a Vienna district councilor herself one of the few trans* politicians in Austria, emphasizes: “Trans*, intersex and non-binary people have been faced with more and more hate, prejudice, dangerous disinformation and unfortunately also violence in recent years confronted. This is precisely why we must not allow ourselves to be intimidated and vehemently demand nationwide action against exclusion, stigmatization and violence!”

In this context, Lindner emphasizes the responsibility of society as a whole: “In view of the increasing number of hate crimes, we finally need a national action plan against hate and the expansion of protection against discrimination, also on the basis of gender identity! We know that hate crimes and the spread of conspiracy theories against people because of their gender identity are a rapidly growing problem – and Austrian politics must finally react decisively to this!” (Conclusion) ls
