Aviso: Study “Part-time in the hospital – a necessary trend?” on November 12th in Graz

The life models of today’s doctors look completely different than before. A healthy and safe balance between work and private life – to protect patients, but also doctors – is absolutely necessary. However, it is often difficult to implement. Therefore, flexible working time models such as part-time work must be made possible – rigid models will drive doctors out of hospitals and probably also out of the public health system, according to the Federal Curia of Employed Doctors (BKAÄ) of the Austrian Medical Association (ÖÄK).

Harald Mayer, ÖÄK Vice President and Chairman of the Federal Curia for employed doctors, provides initial inspiration for the discussion: “I would be in favor of dissolving the historically grown, strict separation between ’employed’ and ‘established’. We have to rethink and move away from the traditional attitude that only ‘full-time’ makes sense for working in hospitals. Doctors also have a right to a family and the associated childcare. In Switzerland, for example, doctors can share general practice positions and use their remaining workforce freely – i.e. also work in the hospital.” In addition, according to Mayer, one should think specifically about what bonus incentives there can be for those who still want to work full-time. Another important factor is the inclusion of older doctors in the solidarity health system – even beyond retirement age: “We may be able to motivate older colleagues to do this with part-time models – we need their experience especially in training the next generations of doctors .”
