A new, innovative educational offering from the Vienna Business School will start in the 2025/26 school year at the VBS Akademiestrasse location: The LogistikHAK offers – in addition to the tried and tested educational offerings of the commercial academy – a strong logistics training package in theory and practice. “We aim to offer the most comprehensive school training in the field of logistics in Austria,” explains the director of VBS Akademiestrasse, Evelyn Meyer. “As an Erasmus+ school and holder of the Austrian Ecolabel, we take internationality and sustainability into consideration in our training right from the start. Both are decisive for the present and, above all, for the future of logistics.”
Training for a crisis-proof industry with a future
“In the LogistikHAK “In addition to the “classic” HAK subjects, there are staggered teaching units in the area of logistics on the timetable,” explains Tanja Sima, a teacher at VBS Akademiestrasse and a key player in the development of the LogistikHAK. “This includes practical logistics, in-depth technical language in logistics in English, ERP – Enterprise Resource Planning programs for the digitalization of logistics that are used in business – and of course logistics management.” The world of logistics permeates the entire lesson, Sima continues. “As part of the HAK training, around 20 subjects are taught, in which logistics topics each have their place.”
Pupils at LogistikHAK undertake to take the oral Matura in the subject of logistics management. With your school leaving certificate and diploma examination, you also acquire the right to work as a freight forwarding clerk.
The creation of LogistikHAK
For several years now, VBS Akademiestrasse has been offering training with a focus on logistics management in the advanced course (AUL). Logistics is also available as an optional subject in the commercial academy and business school. Based on the knowledge gained and many inquiries, the plan arose to develop an opportunity for HAK students to specialize in the logistics area from the first year onwards.
The logistics industry as an educational partner
The timetable was developed in close collaboration with industry representatives. A special role is played by the Transport and Traffic Division of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, whose chairman, Davor Sertic, motivated and supported the VBS Akademiestrasse from the outset on several levels and also regularly holds workshops himself.
“Logistics is an absolute growth industry,” explains Sertic. “Over the past ten years, the number of freight forwarders in Vienna who are desperately looking for skilled workers has increased by 25 percent. The new Logistics HAK ensures that companies find more of these professionals: Young people receive top training that ensures they have excellent career opportunities.”
The Transport and Traffic division also implements other activities to inspire young people to pursue a career in logistics – the division sends its own logistics ambassadors to school classes who report on their varied activities and answer questions. They are supported by a colorful booklet from the Booky series, which presents logistics in a modern and interactive way. The “Logistics Workshop” event series, on the other hand, brings young people closer to the industry through stations and games.
The school of economics
The Vienna Business School is operated by the Vienna Merchants’ Fund at six locations in Vienna and Mödling and, as a “school of business”, is traditionally closely linked to the corporate world. The cooperation with the transport and traffic division and with leading companies enables exciting workshops, excursions, internships and closely supported diploma thesis topics and offers students the opportunity to build their network during their training. You also have the opportunity to take part in competitions and lectures by renowned representatives of the logistics industry and can obtain important additional certificates (e.g. in the area of customs).
The fund’s board member, KommR Helmut Schramm, emphasizes the importance of the LogistikHAK for the entire Vienna Business School: “By creating the LogistikHAK, we are demonstrating in an exemplary manner how the requirements of a constantly changing economy can be addressed. We are proud to have created a real educational innovation that will hopefully set a precedent.”
