SP-Ludwig/Novak: Never forget means standing up against fascism, racism and anti-Semitism at all times!
Vienna (OTS) –

Under the motto “Never forget,” more than a hundred social democrats gathered at Vienna’s Central Cemetery on November 1st to commemorate the victims of National Socialism and Austrofascism as part of the traditional memorial march. During the Nazi era, many people risked their lives and often paid with death in resistance to the National Socialist regime and through their fight to preserve democracy and protect human rights. History shows that the fight for a free and open society never ends: totalitarian ideologies and hatred of those who think differently are still a threat to our free democracy today.***

A strong democracy is the foundation for preserving freedom, justice and humanity and counteracting the autocratic efforts of individuals, emphasized SPÖ Vienna regional party chairman Mayor Dr. Michael Ludwig in his speech: “Democracy and human rights are on the decline worldwide and we are experiencing a worrying shift to the right, not only in Austria, but throughout Europe. At a time when authoritarian regimes are gaining strength around the world, it is more important than ever to stand up together for democratic values and take a clear stance. “Never forgetting means speaking out against fascism, racism and anti-Semitism at all times.”

That is why it is clear for the Social Democrats to rule out any cooperation with the FPÖ. Ludwig makes it clear once again: “Right-wing populists and right-wing extremists pursue a politics of fear and play with the uncertainty that multiple crises and an increasingly complex world leave behind among people. We must consistently counteract this division, polarization and hatred with our policy of social cohesion and peaceful coexistence!” What is important is clear orientation, lived values and concrete solutions: “We have to fight for every company and every job, secure public health care for the future and make life affordable again,” said SPÖ Vienna regional party chairman Mayor Dr. Michael Ludwig. “That’s why it’s good if today – on this November 1st – we remember what happens when a society sinks into hatred, war and destruction. Never again, never forget!” warns Ludwig in conclusion.

“We are currently experiencing in many countries around the world how millions of people are having their freedom and basic rights restricted by totalitarian systems. History teaches us: Only if we stand up together for a strong democracy can we preserve it and ensure a future of freedom for future generations. ‘Never Forget’ is not just a commitment to remembering, but an urgent call to vigilance. An active culture of remembrance across all generations also means fighting every day for a peaceful and just world,” adds SPÖ Vienna state party secretary Barbara Novak, MA.
