Assan Alüminyum, one of the world’s leading producers of flat-rolled aluminum, has increased its sustainability efforts by acquiring a solar power plant in Karaman. The facility, spread over an area of 11.37 hectares, has an installed clean energy generation capacity of 10 MWp and is an important step in the company’s commitment to generating renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions.
The acquisition is in line with Assan Alüminyum’s recently published decarbonization roadmap, which describes the company’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. This solar power plant will help achieve key roadmap milestones and reduce the company’s carbon footprint by offsetting its market-based Scope 2 emissions.
Göksal Güngör, Managing Director of Assan Alüminyum, emphasized the importance of renewable energies in the company’s strategy: “With this solar power plant, we are taking another important step towards expanding our renewable energy portfolio and reducing our carbon emissions. Our goal is to ‘close the future.’ produce without wasting it’ and this acquisition reflects our commitment to reducing our carbon intensity, thereby contributing to the circular economy.
In addition to the new solar plant, Assan Alüminyum already operates a renewable hydroelectric energy plant in Manavgat. This facility produces an amount of clean energy approximately equivalent to the company’s annual electricity consumption, further supporting the company’s sustainability goals. By using renewable energy sources and producing and purchasing international renewable energy certificates (I-REC), the company is able to fully offset its market-based Scope 2 emissions.
As part of its broader sustainability efforts, Assan Alüminyum continues to implement energy efficiency projects that have successfully reduced its natural gas and electricity consumption. The company’s sustainability-focused activities and processes have been recognized worldwide as the company received the Aluminum Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Performance Standard certificate for its production and recycling facilities.
The company’s efforts to reduce its environmental footprint were also financially supported. Assan Alüminyum recently secured $90 million in green financing from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), making it the first company in its sector to receive a 100% climate-friendly green loan.
Assan Alüminyum is committed to its core values of reliability, flexibility, innovation and sustainability and strives to contribute to both the economy and the environment on the path to a more sustainable future.
