“Current” question of the week on PULS 24: The majority of Austrians are in favor of the FPÖ appointing the first President of the National Council
Vienna (OTS) –

The pointed political talk “Aktuell: Die Woche” with moderator Meinrad KnappPolicy Advisor Thomas Hofer and pollsters Peter Hajek reviews the political week every Friday at 7:50 p.m. on PULS 24, at 10:20 p.m. on ATV and on Austria’s SuperStreamer JOYN. Among other things, the results of Peter Hajek’s current opinion survey will be discussed. This time, in view of the last National Council election, 500 Austrians eligible to vote wanted to know in field work on October 21st and 24th whether the FPÖ should nominate the first National Council President based on the election results. The question was: “It is customary for the party with the largest number of votes in parliament to appoint the first President of the National Council. Are you for or against the FPÖ, the party with the largest number of votes in the election, being the first President of the National Council this time?”

Of all those surveyed, 28 percent of the people surveyed were in favor of a first National Council President from the ranks of the FPÖ, 27 percent are more in favor, whereas 13 percent are rather against – 22 percent completely reject a liberal National Council President. The support is understandably greatest among liberal voters: 94 percent are in favor of a blue 1st National Council President. The second largest response is among the ÖVP electorate: 10 percent are clearly in favor of an FPÖ candidate, 40 percent are more in favor of a liberal 1st National Council President. 49 percent somewhat or completely reject this option. Among NEOS voters, support is just under half at 49 percent, with 15 percent clearly and 34 percent more in favor. This is followed by the SPÖ electorate with an approval rating of 38 percent (8 percent very/30 percent somewhat); the liberal candidate receives the greatest rejection from the Greens, where 62 percent are somewhat or very against a blue 1st National Council President.

Alexandra Siegl, Head of the Carinthia Office: “55% of the population are of the opinion that the custom that the party with the highest number of votes appoints the first President of the National Council should also apply to the FPÖ. 35% would prefer to make an exception for the Blues, especially SPÖ and Green voters. Supporters of black and pink are divided on the issue. In any case, the blue candidate will be waved through in the National Council, after all you don’t want to suggest to the blue electorate to the President of Parliament that their vote would have no effect.”
