“Take a seat” with a Communal Walking Experience by Hamish Fulton
For the third time, the “Take a Seat” event series invites you to a public debate on socially relevant topics at Schillerplatz. On October 24th, 2024, the British conceptual artist and walking artist Hamish Fulton claims and negotiates the communal space in front of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.
The series of events Take a seat wants to communicate the main points of teaching at the academy to the outside world and invite public debate on socially relevant topics. The focus is on including and creating a public at Schillerplatz. The third event in the series was conceived by the Institute for Fine Arts and this time the content is about how visual art can use its means to locate, negotiate and contribute to participation in the concerns of democracy and society in public space.
The right to keep a space public has always had to be granted. Only by entering and passing through is a space claimed and at the same time negotiated democratically. With this awareness of being politically active, the artists approach the freely accessible Schillerplatz, which surrounds the academy: With artistic interventions and by standing and walking together, we can change and shape communal space, grow, be heard and visible.
The highlight will be one of Hamish Fulton’s open events at Schillerplatz Communal Walking Experiences celebrate with the audience in Vienna. Fulton, born in 1946, is a British photographer, conceptual artist, painter and sculptor. Since 1973 he has only created works that are based on the experience of migration and human walking in the environment and calls himself Walking Artist. He translates his walks and guided performances into a variety of media, including photographs, illustrations and wall texts. His work is represented in major museum collections such as Tate Britain and MoMA. He was a participant in Documenta 5, 6, and 7.
The two-hour program is complemented by a lecture by the philosopher Jens Badura as well as artistic contributions and performances by the students Clemens Grömmer, Kweku Okokroko, Ilay Schwingshandl, Matei Alexandrescu, Esther Vörösmarty and Randolf Helmstetter, curated by Miya Yoshida.
