Current studies of Austrian and European running water and drinking water samples showed high levels of contamination in almost all samples from the eternal chemical TFA (trifluoroacetate), which enters the environment via PFAS pesticides. The Values were many times higher than the EU-wide legal drinking water limit for pesticide metabolites with unacceptable toxicological properties.
After studies recently showed that TFA is one such pesticide metabolite “with unacceptable toxicological properties”, the environmental protection organization GLOBAL commissioned a legal opinion in 2000 to clarify whether the EU member states – and thus also Austria – should act in the light of the new findings To protect drinking water and human health, those pesticides that release TFA into the environment and groundwater can, or may even have to, be banned. We will present the legal analysis at the press conference and take a look at the next necessary steps in politics and agricultural production.
