BEIJING, Sept. 11, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Diao Rongchun, who works as a primary school teacher in Taishitun Township in Beijing, has always advocated for education in mountainous regions.

In keeping with the concept of “tolerance, gentleness, cultivation and education,” Diao adopts a teaching method based on interaction, mutual appreciation and mutual promotion, with close attention to the development of each student.

To this end, she has traveled throughout the community, visiting neglected children and single-parent students in mountainous regions, creating special learning plans for them, and earning the trust and gratitude of their parents.

At an awards ceremony on Sunday honoring exemplary teachers and outstanding groups and institutions in China’s education ahead of the 40th Teachers’ Day on Tuesday, Diao was one of 716 people to be honored with the title of National Model Teacher.

Chinese President Xi Jinping extended greetings to teachers and other education workers across the country at a national education meeting in Beijing from Monday to Tuesday, urging them to make solid progress in achieving the strategic goal of unifying China leading country in education.

Building a quality education system

To date, China has developed the largest and highest quality education system in the world and made a historic leap in the spread of education.

According to official information, in 2023 there will be 498,300 schools of all types and levels across the country with 291 million students completing academic training and 18.918 million full-time teachers.

Meanwhile, the academic qualifications of the teachers have also steadily improved. In 2023, 78 percent of elementary school teachers and 93 percent of high school teachers have a bachelor’s degree or higher. The proportion of teachers with higher professional titles has increased significantly, among other things through the establishment of upper school teacher positions in primary and secondary schools.

The higher education enrollment rate has increased from 30 percent in 2012 to 57.8 percent in 2021. This is a historical leap that means that higher education in China has reached a stage of universal recognition. Many Chinese universities and disciplines have reached a very high level worldwide.

In addition, China attaches great importance to the equivalence and coordinated development of vocational and general education, and accelerates the creation of a modern vocational education system to help students with diverse talents and interests realize their potential.

Xi Jinping described the efforts to build a leading education system as complex and systematic, stressing the need to focus on the fundamental task of education, namely the promotion of virtue. He called for efforts to develop high-quality teachers and stressed the importance of improving the status, pay and welfare of teachers in order to make teaching one of the most respected professions.

Xi also pointed out the need to develop high-quality and balanced compulsory education and reduce inequalities between urban and rural areas, regions, schools and social groups.

Opening up China’s education sector to the world

In China, many large-scale national projects rely heavily on the key technologies provided by universities, which play a crucial role in fundamental research and are the source of major scientific and technological breakthroughs.

At the National Science and Technology Awards Conference in 2023, universities and colleges received 75.5 percent of state awards for natural sciences, 75.6 percent of state awards for technological inventions, and 56.5 percent of state awards for scientific and technological progress .

In addition, China cooperates with relevant countries on important scientific research projects by establishing overseas science and education cooperation centers to address global challenges.

The China-Africa Joint Research Center, founded in 2013, is the first comprehensive scientific and educational institution that China has established abroad. The center brings together scientific research and teaching institutions from 16 African countries and China to collaborate in areas such as biodiversity surveys and assessments, water resources and ecological environmental monitoring, creating a network that integrates scientific research and talent training.

To date, the Center’s researchers have collectively published more than 600 publications, held over 30 international training courses and technical sessions, and trained more than 300 students from 14 African countries.

China also hosts various international conferences such as the World Digital Education Conference, sets up Luban workshops in several countries, and expands exchanges between Chinese and foreign youth, aiming to build a major global education center.

During the national meeting on education, Xi stressed the importance of further opening up China’s education sector to the world, including expanding international academic exchanges and expanding cooperation in education and scientific research.
