Vienna (OTS) – While birth rates are falling in Europe, the population in emerging countries such as India continues to grow. India overtook China this year as the world’s most populous country. Of the more than 1.4 billion people in India, 900 million are of working age – enormous potential for the economy, but according to UN studies, not even half of school leavers are prepared for the jobs of the future. The “WELTjournal” – presented by Patricia Pawlicki – will show the report “India – The Most Populous Country in the World” on ORF 2 on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at 10:30 p.m. The documentary “Power of Words – Writing against India’s Patriarchy” will follow in “WELTjournal +” at 11:05 p.m.

“WELTjournal” reporter Patrick A. Hafner shows what challenges India has to overcome if it wants to follow China’s unprecedented economic growth. Education and birth control alone cannot control population growth. What is needed is educational opportunities, especially for girls, and qualified jobs for everyone in order to utilize the potential to further advance India’s economy and sustainably stabilize population development.

In the male-dominated and still caste-dominated Indian society, women from the lowest Dalit caste, the so-called untouchables, are confronted with extensive discrimination. In order to make their voices heard and to denounce injustices, they founded a newspaper, which is also surprisingly successful online. “WELTjournal +” shows the award-winning documentary with the original title “Writing With Fire”: Equipped with smartphones, chief reporter Meera and her journalists set out to tell the stories of the excluded and highlight discrimination and injustice. The women break traditions with their journalistic work and show what it means to reverse power relations – with astonishing success.
