First Olympic medal for a competitive athlete from the Armed Forces |  Federal Ministry of Defense, July 31, 2024

On July 31, 2024, platoon leader Michaela Polleres won the bronze medal in the judo weight class up to 70 kg for Austria. The Lower Austrian, who trains at the army sports center in Seebenstein, prevailed in the fight for third place against the Spaniard Ai Tsunoda Roustant with Ippon. The 27-year-old also won her second Olympic medal after Tokyo 2021 in her second Olympic participation. The army athlete secured Austria’s first medal at the Olympic Games in Paris.

Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner: “I am very proud of the fantastic performance of platoon leader Michaela Polleres. With this medal she has achieved what only very few athletes are able to do and achieved great things. Their hard work was once again rewarded with precious metal. I wish all of our athletes continued success and all the best, I keep my fingers crossed for everyone!”

The Army Sports Center has been promoting Austrian competitive sports with its eleven Army competitive sports centers since 1962. Every year, up to 495 people, including 20 in sports for the disabled, are part of the army sports support program. Army sports traditionally provide numerous participants in major sporting events such as the Olympic Games, European and World Championships. The athletes of the Federal Army have already achieved numerous successes and medals for Austria in the past.
