Davie, the Canada-based multinational shipbuilding company, today announced its intention to make a significant, long-term commitment to the American shipbuilding industry.
Pending final site and partner selection, Davie’s decision coincides with a series of actions announced today by the U.S. government to increase the efficiency, resilience and competitiveness of U.S. shipbuilding. The production of high-quality U.S. ships for the domestic and international markets is also expected to revitalize American naval power, stimulate economic growth and create many skilled jobs for American workers.
Davie’s plans are also consistent with the ICE pact, a trilateral collaboration between the United States, Canada and Finland announced on July 11. The ICE pact will promote production of in-demand polar icebreakers in participating countries, strengthening the economy, climate and national security while supporting important shared interests in the contested polar regions. Significantly, on July 22, the U.S. Department of Defense unveiled its Arctic Strategy 2024, in which the Department of Defense will take action, in collaboration with allies and partners, to maintain the Arctic as a secure and stable region.
Davie has operated continuously since 1825 and has built over 720 specialized vessels, including many icebreakers. Davie is currently building the world’s largest heavy icebreaker contract for Canada, one of the founding partners of the ICE pact. Davie is also the proud owner of the Helsinki Shipyard in Finland, another ICE Pact founder known for its exceptional polar ship supply chain. Founded in 1865, the Helsinki shipyard has built more than 50% of today’s global icebreaking fleet.
Davie has previously supported America’s skilled shipbuilders on strategic projects such as the U.S. Navy’s Nimitz-class aircraft carriers and Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.
