The historic Nibelungenhof in Marbach ad Donau is being revitalized
St. Pölten (OTS) –

The Nibelungenhof in Marbach an der Donau, which has been empty for years, is being renovated and revitalized with the support of ecoplus regional funding and the state of Lower Austria. The former shipmaster’s inn from the 15th century is intended to serve as a model project for the new form of vacation and work called “workation”. In the future, the Nibelungenhof will become a place where a combination of vacation and work is possible. In addition, the historic building structure should be given an authentic and at the same time infrastructurally contemporary form.

“This project makes an important contribution to preserving the cultural tradition in the region and will act as a creative meeting place for guests and locals. The revitalization of the Nibelungenhof also helps to reduce vacancies in Lower Austria,” emphasizes State Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner.

In the future, guests at the Nibelungenhof will find ideal conditions for relaxation and creative work. The exclusive location further enhances the location: The historic building is located directly on the Danube waterfront, the idyllic market lane, the rock gardens and at the intersection of old pilgrimage routes. A “Donauloft” will be built on the ground floor, which can be used as an event and exhibition space. Ateliers and inspiring apartments dedicated to Danube culture are also planned. “This project aims to create an extraordinary offering in the Nibelungengau that is aimed primarily at artists and creative people,” explain the project managers Lorenz Birklbauer and Verena Knott-Birklbauer from the project sponsor KB Donau-Barock OG. Based on an extensive cultural tourism study, a detailed operating concept has already been developed.

The project in question includes the extensive revitalization of the Nibelungenhof, which is in dire need of renovation. The mansard hipped roof, the baroque facade and the old cellar vaults are evidence of all the important eras of Marbach’s history and should be preserved. “Right from the start, our aim was to preserve and revitalize this special cultural object in the Lower Austrian Danube region, with high cultural and architectural quality, and to make it available for innovative use to revitalize the town center and the region. We are pleased that we have found reliable partners in the state of Lower Austria, ecoplus and the municipality of Marbach with Mayor Peter Grafeneder who wholeheartedly share these objectives,” said those responsible for the project. The implementation of the project and the commissioning of the Nibelungenhof are planned by the end of 2026.

“This project contributes to the upgrading of our town center and is another example of the constant improvement in the quality of life in our community,” says Mayor Peter Grafeneder enthusiastically.

The project is being implemented with the support of ecoplus regional funding. “The revitalization of the Nibelungenhof will create a new tourist offer. The entire region benefits from this,” emphasizes ecoplus authorized representative Petra Patzelt.
