Vienna (OTS) The SALON, Austria’s toughest wine competition, celebrates the 275 best wines in the country. 29 of them are SALON winners, including wines typical of the region and newcomers. They received an award at the Palais Niederösterreich in Vienna. 16 winners come from Lower Austria, eight from Burgenland, four from Styria and one from Vienna.

“Congratulations to all SALON award winners,” says Chris Yorke, Managing Director of Austria Wine Marketing (ÖWM). For more than 35 years, the SALON has been considered one of the most important wine competitions in Austria. “From thousands of submissions, only the best wines make it into the SALON. The only decisive factor is the quality of the wines, which is assessed in multi-stage blind tastings,” says Yorke during the award ceremony for the 29 SALON winning wines in the Palais Niederösterreich in downtown Vienna.

SALON wines are selected from thousands of submissions

For the first time since the pandemic, the winning wines could be tasted on a large scale again. The personal exchange with the winemakers was also very well received. A total of 275 wines were included in the SALON this year: 159 from Lower Austria, 68 from Burgenland, 37 from Styria, eight from Vienna and three from the mountains. The best in each category are SALON winners 2024 – including the best DAC wines and sparkling wines typical of the region.

Of the 29 winners, 16 come from Lower Austria, eight from Burgenland, four from Styria and one from Vienna.

The SALON wines are determined every year from thousands of submissions. The majority of the wines come from the state awards. In a final blind tasting, an independent jury – consisting of wine experts, sommeliers and sommeliers and experts from gastronomy and retail – determines which wines will be included in the SALON.

Austria’s best DAC wines

Since 2022, the wines in the SALON have no longer been tasted according to grape variety, but rather according to their origin. The category “Typical wines” includes, for example, the DAC wines from all areas, from the Weinviertel to southern Styria. In addition to classic tasting criteria, what is crucial is how well a wine reflects the typical taste of its wine-growing region.

Award-winning variety: from sparkling wine to alternative wine

In addition to the clearly defined DAC wines of origin, Austria’s winemakers produce a wide variety of wines from different grape varieties and styles. In the SALON they are gathered in the “Wine Diversity” category: from fresh white wines to rosé and strong red wines to sweet wines, PIWI varieties (fungus-resistant grape varieties) and alternative wines.

The best sparkling wines in Austria are also awarded in the SALON. In the “Sekt Austria” category, sparkling wine with a protected designation of origin is awarded. The victories in the three sparkling wine categories went to Lower Austria.

A large proportion of the wines come from environmentally conscious production

Almost half of the SALON wines – 123 of 275 – come from wineries with at least one environmentally conscious certification, i.e. “Sustainable Austria”, organic or biodynamic. Some wineries are even certified multiple times, for example organic and “Sustainable Austria”. “The SALON also shows that Austria is a pioneer in environmentally conscious wine production,” explains Yorke.
