33 soldiers support civilian emergency services
Vienna (OTS) – As of today, July 12, 2024, the Federal Army is on assistance mission in Teigitschgraben near Voitsberg. After last night’s severe storms, soldiers are supporting civilian emergency services in dealing with flood damage. After exploration by the Federal Army’s disaster response platoon, the soldiers clear blockages in water bodies. A helicopter is deployed to provide assistance. The current situation will continue to be monitored – additional forces and resources will be mobilized if necessary.
Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner: “Last night’s events show how important it is to act quickly and in a coordinated manner. The Federal Army is ready to help and support at any time – protecting the population is the top priority. This preparedness highlights the role of the armed forces in dealing with disasters and supporting our society. I would like to thank all soldiers and civilian emergency services who are ready to be there for the population in times of need.”
Due to heavy rainfall, massive flooding occurred in the Voitsberg district. In Teigitschgraben, the soldiers of the Styria Military Command’s disaster response platoon clear waters of driftwood that have washed up. This prevents artificial dams from forming and flooding from occurring again. The Federal Army is prepared to remain deployed as long as necessary.
If a catastrophe is imminent – for example due to persistent rain – the soldiers in the barracks prepare and stay ready. Within a few hours they are ready to help. At the request of the authorities, the Federal Army moves out and supports civilian emergency services. In the event of major accidents, several thousand helpers can ensure help for people in Austria at the same time.
