Volkshilfe Vienna: Wave of poverty must not destroy the future of our youth!

The inflation crisis has hit young people in Austria hard. The youth monitor of the AK Vienna shows the effects of the inflation crisis on Austrian youth.

Vienna (OTS)Inflation is affecting more and more people and confirms what we see every day: the inflation crisis, which has long since become a wave of poverty, is also affecting the so-called middle class“, says Tanja Wehsely, Managing Director of Volkshilfe Wien, about the study results. One in five young people in Austria cannot start their training or has to stop it due to the inflation crisis. “In this way, inflation permanently destroys future opportunities!” warns Wehsely.

Affordable housing

Many young people can no longer afford to move out of their parents’ home. Those who manage to do so often live in precarious and short-term private tenancies. “The biggest drivers of inflation are the high rental costs in the private sector and short-term rental agreements,” says Wehsely. “We need modern general tenancy law so that tenants with fixed-term rental contracts are not at the mercy of their landlords, as well as an Austria-wide commitment to affordable housing. Because what Vienna is doing must set a precedent throughout Austria: Housing is a human right, not an object of speculation.”
