Heaviest attacks on Ukrainian cities in a long time: NEIGHBOR IN NEED launches another appeal for donations

Vienna (OTS) On Monday, numerous cities in Ukraine were massively attacked with rockets, leaving at least 36 people dead and more than 80 injured. The Destruction of the children’s hospital Ochmatdyt in Kyiv is causing international outrage. ORF and NACHBAR IN NOT are once again asking Austrians to support “Help for Ukraine”.

The work of NEIGHBOR IN NEED continues
Aid workers and volunteers were immediately deployed at the children’s hospital to free the injured from the rubble. The Red Cross assisted in the evacuation of the children who were being treated in the neurosurgical department. Numerous volunteers helped on site and distributed water and food to those affected and relief workers.

The relief efforts of the NACHBAR IN NOT organizations Workers’ Samaritan Association, CARE, Caritas, Diakonie, Hilfewerk International, Malteser, Red Cross and Volkshilfe continue after more than two years. Still are 40 percent of people in Ukraine rely on humanitarian aid. The constant fear and uncertainty drains them physically and mentally – they need psychosocial support as well as financial resources to be able to buy everyday items or pay their rent.

Andreas Knapp, Secretary General International Programs Caritas Austria and Chairman of the Board of NACHBAR IN NOT: It’s hard to believe what children and families in Ukraine have to experience: instead of summer, school holidays and vacation, for them it’s about survival every day. In summer camps and safe, child-friendly rooms, we give them some time off from the war and can also provide them with psychosocial support. We must not abandon the people of Ukraine now, which is why we continue to ask the Austrians for support!

The recent attack on a children’s hospital is not the only one. More than 1,200 health facilities have been destroyed since February 2022, and around 15 million people have no guaranteed access to medical care.

Michael Opriesnig, Secretary General of the Red Cross and board member of NEIGHBOR IN NOTHING expresses concern about the destruction of the children’s hospital in Kiev:Once again a hospital has been the target of attacks, resulting in a deterioration in medical care. We have been operating mobile health teams throughout Ukraine for more than a year. These can ensure care in rural areas, but also if a health facility is destroyed.

Help must continue – NEIGHBOR IN NOTHING is launching another appeal for donations
The help from NEIGHBOR IN NEED in Ukraine is arriving. More than 2.3 million people could still be helped to this day. The humanitarian situation remains catastrophic and is getting worse due to increasing attacks on civilian infrastructure. NEIGHBOR IN NOTHING asks Austrians to donate again.

ORF General Director Mag. Roland Weißmann: „The situation in Ukraine requires rapid on-site assistance. As a partner, ORF supports NACHBAR IN NOT in all of its media. I would like to thank all the people in Austria who follow the calls for donations in the ORF media and thus help the people affected, especially the children.

Prof. Pius Strobl, head of the Corporate Social Responsibility department and therefore ORF head NEIGHBOR IN NOTHING: „Images like these from the children’s hospital in Kiev, which was destroyed by Russian attacks, show us that we cannot and must not stop with our help. At this critical time, it is of the utmost importance that we, as European neighbors, clearly show the people of Ukraine that we are there for them and are supporting them in their reconstruction. The war is not over, aid in Ukraine must not ebb – every cent donated counts.
