Vienna (OTS) The “WELTjournal” will be heading to Hungary and the “Orban system” on Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at 10:30 p.m. on ORF 2 and on ORF ON, before “Generation Erasmus” takes place at 11:20 p.m. on “WELTjournal +”. continues.

WELTjournal: Orban system – love-hate relationship with the EU

Hungary will hold the EU Council Presidency on a rotating basis until the end of the year. During its time as chairman, the Budapest government has planned to strengthen the economy and defense policy and to combat illegal migration through agreements with third countries. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, together with the FPÖ, among others, founded the group “Patriots for Europe” as a new, right-wing faction in the EU Parliament.

As a declared supporter of Donald Trump, he has based his EU presidency on the motto “Make Europe Great Again”. Prime Minister Orbán’s relationship with the European Union is tense, but the EU funding for Hungary also indirectly strengthens the popularity of his Fidesz party. The WELTjournal shows how the Prime Minister is eroding democracy in Hungary step by step and follows three women who have been fighting against the system established by Viktor Orbán for years: the opposition politician Tímea Szabó, the journalist Babett Oroszi and the nurse Nikoletta Antal.

WELTjournal+: Generation Erasmus – Europe’s success story

There is hardly any EU measure that is as popular as the Erasmus program: the European exchange program for students, named after the cosmopolitan scholar Erasmus of Rotterdam, is a success story. It not only promotes academic exchange, but also strengthens identification with Europe and creates a positive European attitude to life. To date, 15 million young people have gone to another EU country for one or two semesters with the Erasmus program – in addition to students, apprentices, volunteers and supervisors. Students receive up to 500 euros per month, depending on the destination country. In addition, the fact that a lot of organizational effort is eliminated makes the program attractive: study achievements abroad are recognized, there are special language courses at the exchange universities and a reception committee organizes legendary international Erasmus parties.

WELTjournal+ accompanies young people on their Erasmus adventure in other European countries and visits the first Erasmus couples and families: exchange students from the very beginning who met during their stay abroad and started a family.
