Expansion of the B 36 between Grafenschlag and Vitis completed

Road safety is a priority for the state of Lower Austria

St. Pölten (OTS) The B 36 state road was expanded to a length of around 925 meters between Grafenschlag and Vitis and the construction of an overtaking route significantly increased traffic safety. To meet today’s modern traffic requirements, an asymmetrical centerline was applied to enable easier overtaking. The B 36 state road in this area has an average traffic volume of around 5,500 vehicles per day.

The expansion took place in two construction phases in 2023 and 2024. The earthworks to create the widening began on October 16, 2023. As a result, the road surface was milled off over a length of 925 meters and an area of 7,500 square meters and a new surface was then applied. Due to the late start of construction, it was necessary due to the weather to temporarily stop construction work and continue it in spring 2024.

A total closure was required for the second construction phase. The total closure stretched from April 8th to June 13th with a construction period of ten weeks. The company Leyrer + Graf from Gmünd carried out the earthworks as well as the milling and asphalt work. The stabilization work was carried out by the HABAU company from Perg. The employees of the Waidhofen an der Thaya road maintenance department took on various additional work in collaboration with construction and delivery companies from the region. Traffic was opened with speed restrictions due to the lack of ground markings on June 13th. With the application of the floor markings, the project has now been completely completed. The total costs of around 1.44 million euros will be borne entirely by the state of Lower Austria.
