The next GuKG amendment brings initial prescription of medication and more competencies | Austrian health

Many of the ÖGKV’s demands were implemented in this step. New specializations are also coming.

We are very satisfied with this step in the care reform, as really important demands that we put forward in our statements were taken into account to a very high degree. This is a big step towards bringing professional care in Austria into line with international standards

ÖGKV President Elisabeth Potzmann

Vienna (OTS) After the first prescription of medical devices, there is now also the first prescription of medicines – the new § 15b in the GuKG (Health and Nursing Act). According to this, members of the higher service are allowed to prescribe medicines in the areas of food intake, personal hygiene as well as nursing interventions and prophylaxis. Medicines are now also allowed for as long continue to be prescribed by DGKP until the changing patient situation requires feedback to the doctor.

Another long-standing demand was met by changing the list of delegations. So far, the powers have been explicitly listed in the law. This difficulty in everyday working life is now being reduced. In the future, qualified health personnel will be allowed to carry out all activities up to the qualification of a doctor – it is no longer necessary to check at every step whether it is included in the legal list. It will also be possible to advise, care for and accompany patients in the area of medical expertise of the DGKP. “We are very satisfied with this step in the care reform, as really important demands that we put forward in our statements were taken into account to a very high degree. This is a big step towards bringing professional care in Austria into line with international standards,” says ÖGKV President Elisabeth Potzmann.

Another important point of the amendment concerns specializations. In the future, technical colleges and universities will be able to offer these with a minimum of 60 ECTS. This makes specialized training possible, for example in anesthesia or surgical nursing. The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) remains an important pillar of quality assurance.
