Top sommeliers have chosen: These are the 146 most influential winemakers in Austria in 2024

The KALK&KEGEL list 2024: 70 of the best sommeliers from all over Austria have put together a list of 146 winemakers who are pioneering for Austria.

Vienna (OTS) They are united by a distinctive craftsmanship and an exemplary attitude towards nature and soils: 146 winemakers can be found on the new KALK&KEGEL list 2024. 35 of them have been added. For the first time, however, winemakers were no longer taken into account. This list was compiled by around 70 of the best sommeliers and sommeliers from all over Austria in collaboration with the up-and-coming gastronomy magazine KALK&KEGEL. The entire list with all newcomers can now be found here www.kalkundkegel.com.

KALK&KEGEL editor Michael Pöcheim-Pech: “This year, and also last year, we received more new recommendations from the sommellerie than ever before. 35 of them ultimately made it onto our list. Around 40 more are under observation for the coming year. The many new wines are, above all, an indication of the dynamism in organic viticulture. Many of the new winemakers on our list have just completed the transition to organic or are in the middle of the transition. The clear signature of their wines is also important and essential.”

The KALK&KEGEL list is considered a valuable recommendation tool for the catering industry. “Every restaurateur who cares about the quality of his wine list should list winemakers from the KALK&KEGEL list,” says Pöcheim-Pech. The criteria for inclusion in the KALK&KEGEL list, which has been published once a year since 2021, are the winegrowers’ distinctive craftsmanship and an exemplary attitude towards nature and soils, which in almost all cases requires at least organic certification or quite often one biodynamic farming means. Pöcheim bad luck: “Winegrowers who can be found on the KALK&KEGEL list are pioneering for the wine country of Austria and are therefore among the most influential winegrowers in the country.

Lower Austria is at the top of the KALK&KEGEL list 2024 with 62 entries, followed by Burgenland (39) and Styria (30). Federal states that are becoming increasingly exciting for winegrowing, such as Carinthia and Upper Austria, are also listed.

The magazine KALK&KEGEL has been writing since 2018 www.kalkundkegel.com about wine and cuisine, is particularly committed to sustainability and quality as well as healthy soils and healthy food, and repeatedly gets involved in political issues. KALK&KEGEL also appears twice a year in Austria and Germany as a high-quality special interest magazine on topics such as “The Future of the Industry”, “Crafts” or, new from the end of July 2024, “Seduction”.
