ORF “matinee” on July 7th: “Summer freshness – travel like in imperial times”, “Otto Wagner – visionary of modernity”

Also: “The Culture Week” – from 9:05 a.m. on ORF 2 and on ORF ON

Vienna (OTS) The holiday feeling at the turn of the century and a brilliant architect and urban planner from this era are the focus of the “matinee” on Sunday, July 7, 2024, from 9:05 a.m. on ORF 2 and on ORF ON. It starts with the nostalgic documentary about the most popular Austro-Hungarian holiday homes of the fin de siècle: “Summer freshness – travel like in imperial times” by Björn Kölz and Gernot Stadler. Afterwards, Rudolf Klingohr’s film “Otto Wagner – Visionary of Modernity” (10 a.m.) is dedicated to the outstanding work of the famous Austrian, whose buildings characterize the cityscape of Vienna to this day. The ORF cultural morning presented by Teresa Vogl ends with “The Culture Week” (10.55 a.m.) with current reports and tips on local cultural events.

“Summer freshness – traveling like in imperial times” (9:05 a.m.)

The Adriatic, the Salzkammergut, Lake Garda and Lake Wörther as well as the Dolomites were the most popular destinations for summer visitors during the time of the Habsburg Monarchy. People traveled to the countryside with the amenities of the city in order to combine the advantages of well-kept nature and urban sociability like in an open-air salon. Writers, actors and composers were inspired by the staged natural idyll. To this day, the former summer resorts are characterized by the nostalgia of a supposedly “good old time” in imperial Austria. Where glamorous life and contemporary chic once dominated, visitors today sometimes only encounter a mild patina. But they still exist, the places and landscapes where, despite modern technology, attempts are made to preserve the flair of bygone days. It is important to feel and explore this atmosphere in order to make the myth of summer freshness tangible.

“Otto Wagner – Visionary of Modernism” (10:00 a.m.)

The buildings of Otto Wagner, the visionary of Viennese architecture, give Vienna the special flair of a metropolis that became world-famous for its style and elegance. Rudolf Klingohr’s film portrait focuses on Wagner’s extensive work and spans from his early work, which was still committed to the pleasing style of historicism, to the masterpieces that are among the jewels of Art Nouveau in Vienna. The documentary creates a cinematic monument to Otto Wagner as a unique architect and incomparable designer and tells the story of his eventful artistic life.
