Toll money for the Stubaital is an affront to the traffic-plagued Wipptal population

BGM Mühlsteiger is sticking to the current path and calling for transparency regarding the weak points of the bridge

Gries am Brenner (OTS) In autumn 2023, the National Council decided to increase ASFINAG’s contribution to improving the environmental situation in the area around the Brenner Motorway from 1% to 3% of toll revenue. It is completely incomprehensible and contradicts the text of the law that although the Wipptal communities are affected by traffic on the motorway, a share of the money should still be transferred to the Stubaital planning association. “It is an affront to the Wipptal population to distribute part of this federal aid for the Wipptal to the Stubai communities along the Brenner Motorway“, Mayor Karl Mühlsteiger is annoyed about the approach of the state of Tyrol.

With regard to the use of the funds allocated to the municipality of Gries am Brenner, Mühlsteiger assures that, as before, these will of course be used for measures to improve the environmental situation in the municipality of Gries am Brenner. “I would like the state government to look instead of looking away at the municipalities that have been in the negative headlines for years because of their financial management“, Mühlsteiger alludes to the financial misery in the community of Matrei in East Tyrol.

The threat of single lanes in the area of the Luegbrücke was repeatedly used by ASFINAG as a means of pressure. The initial findings of the ongoing main bridge inspection have already prompted ASFINAG to inform about the single-lane traffic routing that will be necessary for safety reasons from January 1, 2025. For Mayor Mühlsteiger and numerous experts, the ability to determine the exact time from which the motorway on the Lueg Bridge can no longer have two lanes for safety reasons is remarkable, especially since it was only a year ago that the bridge was replaced by a bridge at the four critical points the bridge’ was stabilized and thus secured. “ASFINAG is extremely non-transparent when it comes to the specific weak points of the bridge and, despite several requests, has not disclosed the publication of the previous static test reports. When it comes to people’s safety, there can be no secrecy“, Mühlsteiger calls for the immediate disclosure of the static test reports and also the publication of the final result of the main bridge test in July.

Mühlsteiger is unimpressed by the fact that ASFINAG is now serious about single-tracking and is increasing the pressure to start construction on the new building. “I am sticking to my path and will continue to do everything I can to ensure that the once-in-a-century opportunity of finding a tunnel solution and thus restoring quality of life for the affected population does not pass by,” concluded Mühlsteiger.
