City Councilor for Culture Kaup-Hasler on the death of Wolfgang Glück | PID Press

Vienna (OTS) “Wolfgang Glück was an important filmmaker in Austrian cinema. “He is one of the few who understood how to bring coming to terms with the past on the big screen,” says Vienna’s City Councilor for Culture Veronica Kaup-Hasler, recalling the work of the versatile director.

“With his film 38based on the book That was Vienna too by Friedrich Torberg, about Austria’s dealings with its National Socialist past, he took up an uncomfortable and therefore all the more relevant topic and thus made an invaluable contribution to Austrian post-war and film history. The film The student Gerberalso based on a novel by Friedrich Torberg, is another lasting work,” says Kaup-Hasler.

“It is also unforgettable that he was able to convince his friend Billy Wilder to visit Vienna again. Furthermore, as a theater director, he mastered the classics with stylistic confidence and humor, as well as modern high culture, and has had a lasting influence on the major stages of the German-speaking world for decades. My thoughts are with his family, friends, co-workers and companions.”

The long-time head of the Vienna Film Academy was awarded the Golden Medal of Honor for services to the State of Vienna in 2004.
