Setting the course
The European Parliament elections have confirmed predicted strong gains for right-wing and far-right parties and strong losses for green and left-wing parties. At the same time, voters have also strengthened the conservative party family and helped ensure a stable middle. What will be crucial for the future course of the EU will be what compromises the future EU Commission and its chairperson will have to make. Susanne Däubel reports.

Juvenile crime
In the European Parliament election, the topics of “immigration” and “security and war” were those that most concerned voters. The first item on the agenda at the first National Council meeting after the election was a current hour, for which the FPÖ chose the topic “Reducing criminal responsibility and an end to multicultural conflicts”. Representatives of all other parties spoke of problems with youth violence, but did not want to lower the age of criminal responsibility. Claus Bruckmann observed the controversial debate.
Broadside
Last week, National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka announced that he would no longer run in the National Council elections in the fall and would no longer seek any other political office. Rebekka Salzer asked Sobotka about his motives and spoke to him about his image and his role as an important pioneer for Sebastian Kurz’s takeover of the party. In this context, Sobotka is making people sit up and take notice with a broadside against former ÖVP boss Reinhold Mitterlehner.
