Animal protection magazine “Tierisch gut”: Got the chicken | City vienna

Tips on keeping turtles and all information about keeping chickens in the city

Vienna (OTS) The latest issue of the City of Vienna’s free animal protection magazine “Tierisch Gut” is dedicated, among other things, to the topic of turtle keeping and, in the children’s section, to the topic of “Chickens in the City”.

“Chickens are becoming increasingly popular as pets. Eggs from your own garden are perceived as sustainable and of high quality,” says Ruth Jily, head of the veterinary office. While there were around 300 registered chicken keepings in Vienna in 2019, this number had already risen to over 500 by 2023. “In most cases, only a few animals are kept by private individuals for self-sufficiency. However, there are clear guidelines for keeping things.”

“Chickens are farm animals and are therefore subject to their own legal regulations. This starts with the reporting requirement. Every keeping of poultry, such as chickens or quails, must be reported to the responsible authority, in Vienna at the veterinary office, within one week of the start of keeping them,” says Ruth Jily. “There are specific husbandry regulations for laying hens, which concern, for example, the size of bedding areas, the height and length of perches and the necessary exercise areas. They can be found in the first animal husbandry regulations and also apply to private chicken keeping.”

In keeping with this topic, the kids section of the new issue of the free animal welfare magazine “Tierisch Gut” is all about chickens. Children can learn more about these interesting animals through play. The magazine contains a lot of exciting information about keeping chickens.

In any case, the veterinary office recommends that Viennese people obtain detailed information before purchasing chickens and consciously think about whether it is even possible to keep chickens in accordance with animal welfare in their respective living situation.
