When Cara Hunter clicked on the video, she couldn’t believe what she saw: explicitly pornographic scenes starring herself. The video was faked and her face was inserted into it, but it appeared deceptively real and quickly spread in her private and professional environment. After that, nothing in her life was the same as before. Millions of women around the world are knowingly or unknowingly falling victim to deepfake porn – fake porn created using artificial intelligence. The real damage of virtual abuse is enormous: public shaming, reputational damage, professional consequences, harassment and threats, panic attacks, depression, suicide. Nobody is safe. Anyone can do it. And yet it’s almost impossible to defend yourself against it: so far, almost no legal measures have been taken to criminalize deepfake pornography.

Even before they become teenagers, on average children have well over 1,000 photos and videos on the Internet that were posted by their parents on social media. Influencers regularly share details from their children’s lives with their followers on Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, YouTube, Snapchat. Many people make good money from their children’s photos: children’s content is one of the most popular and sought-after content, which is why the algorithm promotes these posts. The consequences are often devastating. “If you think sharing your child’s life on social media is harmless, I’m proof you’re wrong,” says Cam, now 24. She knows all too well the negative consequences of the pictures of her childhood that her mother posted: strangers approached her on the street, men asked about the most intimate details. In “WELTjournal +” influencers and those affected talk about their experiences, the dangers on the Internet and the rights of children.
