Assistance assignment in Styria and Burgenland
Vienna (OTS) – After the storms, the Austrian Armed Forces have been on assistance missions in Styria and Burgenland since today, June 9, 2024, to help the local emergency services with the clean-up and reconstruction work.
There are currently 34 soldiers deployed in Styria. After the exploration has been completed, the disaster relief team will build two bridges and remove blockages. The focus of the operation takes place in the Hartberg and Grafendorf area. Further exploration is ongoing.
In Burgenland, 110 soldiers from Jägerbataillon 19 are ready to carry out clearing work and clear basements of mud and water. The main focus of the operation takes place in the Unterschützen area, while the further action is coordinated in the operations team in Oberwart.
“The images we have seen in the affected areas are terrible and that is why it is all the more important that our emergency services get to the scene quickly and help the people. The current situation will continue to be monitored closely and additional forces and resources will be mobilized if necessary. The Federal Army is prepared to remain in action as long as necessary to deal with the consequences of the severe weather disaster,” said Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner
The Austrian Armed Forces have soldiers available around the clock who can be deployed within a few hours or days in an emergency. In the event of major accidents, several thousand helpers can support the civilian emergency services at the same time and ensure rapid help for the people in Austria.
