SPÖ-Leichtfried: Orban’s EU blackmail must end

Criticism of power games by the Hungarian head of government

Vienna (OTS/SK) Since yesterday, Europe’s heads of state and government have been meeting in Brussels for the last EU summit of the year. Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s veto threats had already made headlines in advance. SPÖ European spokesman Jörg Leichtfried criticizes these methods: “The blackmail of Europe by Viktor Orbán must finally end. The fact that the focus is on the power games of the politician who is responsible for massive violations of the rule of law, allegations of corruption and the undermining of Hungarian democracy is more than unnecessary. Important decisions by the EU 27 regarding the start of new accession negotiations or the release of aid funds for Ukraine must not fail because of Viktor Orbán’s argumentative nature,” emphasizes Leichtfried. *****

The SPÖ European spokesman also criticizes the European Commission’s recent decision to release frozen funding totaling 10 billion euros. “The fact that the EU Commission has given in to Orbán’s unworthy power games sends absolutely the wrong message and weakens the rule of law within the EU,” said SPÖ European spokesman Leichtfried.
