Greens Vienna/Spielmann: Sex workers need rights, not stigmatization

The Vienna Greens are calling for the city of Vienna to set up an ombudsman office for sex workers.

Vienna (OTS) On the occasion of today’s International Day of Sex Workers, the Vienna Greens are once again calling for destigmatization and greater protection for sex workers: “Safe and legal work opportunities are not only fair, but also the best means of protecting people in sex work to protect against violence. The femicides of three sex workers in Vienna-Brigittenau in February 2024 shocked us all and showed that there is still an acute need for action,” says Viktoria Spielmann, women’s and social spokesperson for the Vienna Green Party.

Despite the partial legality of sex work in Vienna, there are numerous restrictive measures that discriminate and criminalize sex workers, leading to illegality, violence and exploitation. “If you really want to protect sex workers, you have to work to improve current working conditions. Everything else is eyewash. Because the currently prevailing discrimination against sex workers hits those who do sex work with full force – and these are primarily women,” says Spielmann.

The Vienna Greens are therefore calling for the city of Vienna to set up an ombudsman office for sex workers. Such a facility is of central importance in order to promote the protection of those affected and to deal effectively with their concerns. In addition, the Greens are committed to better infrastructure in places where street sex work is permitted – this includes places of retreat without pressure to consume and easily accessible sanitary facilities. In addition, the city of Vienna’s outreach, multilingual social work is to be increased.

The Vienna Greens are calling for participation in the LEFÖ association’s public action on June 3rd, in which the Vienna Greens will also take part, to support the concerns and rights of sex workers.
