Reiner Reitsamer discusses with a group of experts from politics and the media
Vienna (OTS) – Keywords such as EU army, neutrality or joining NATO are omnipresent in the current EU election campaign. After all, since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the discussion about Austria’s neutrality has flared up again. A special edition of the ORF III discussion format “zur SACHE” on the occasion of the upcoming European Parliament election will examine the topic from different sides on Friday, May 31, 2024, at 8:15 p.m. Reiner Reitsamer discusses questions about NATO, neutrality and solidarity with Heinz Fischer (former Federal President), Irmgard Griss (former President of the Supreme Court, former NEOS member of the National Council), Velina Tchakarova (security expert) and Christian Ultsch (Die Presse) .
Is our neutrality obsolete? Many experts are of the opinion that this is undermined, not very effective and not protective. In view of the numerous political trouble spots, the federal government is alarmed and is investing in defense:
Tanks, air defense and Eurofighters – considerable sums are being invested in Austrian security. A memorandum of understanding to participate in the EU’s Sky Shield air defense system was signed this week. How would Austria behave if an EU country was attacked? What happens to neutrality? How likely is Austria to join NATO? And is an EU army actually a realistic goal?
