Vienna (OTS) The University of Applied Sciences Conference (FHK), which represents the interests of all Austrian universities of applied sciences, welcomes the positive results of the current study “Education in Numbers 2022/23” by STATISTIK AUSTRIA. The universities of applied sciences perform outstandingly in several areas, thereby confirming their crucial role in the Austrian higher education landscape.

Lower dropout rates: Universities of applied sciences focus on practical studies

One of the outstanding findings of the study is the comparatively low dropout rate at technical colleges. While the dropout rate in bachelor’s programs at universities is around 38% on average, it is only 19% at universities of applied sciences. “These figures illustrate the success of the practical and career-oriented studies at universities of applied sciences, which offer students a clear perspective and a direct connection to the world of work.“, says FHK President Ulrike Prommer.

Highly attractive for first-year students:
Technical colleges continue to see an upward trend despite regulated places for beginners

The study also shows that technical colleges continue to be very popular, despite regulated study places. 27% of all students in a year start their studies at a technical college (56% at a university).
These figures underline the attractiveness of technical colleges for young people who are actively looking for a practice-oriented and future-proof course of study.

Strong in practice: Close cooperation with business

Another reason for the success of technical colleges is their close cooperation with business. These collaborations enable students to gain valuable practical experience during their studies and to prepare for the demands of the job market. This is also reflected in the high employment rate of graduates. The practical training and the strong networks of the universities of applied sciences contribute significantly to the professional integration and career development of students.

Regional top values: universities of applied sciences as a motor of the local economy

The technical colleges achieve impressive results not only at the national level, but also in the individual federal states. These regional successes help strengthen the local economy and create jobs. Universities of applied sciences play a central role in regional development and offer young people attractive local educational and career opportunities.

The results of the study “Education in Numbers 2022/23” confirm the important role of universities of applied sciences in the Austrian educational landscape. The low dropout rates, the high attractiveness for first-year students and the strong practical orientation make it an indispensable part of the Austrian higher education system. Universities of applied sciences not only offer high-quality studies, but also contribute to strengthening the economy and society.
