Peking (ots/PRNewswire) – Rizhao Port in East China’s Shandong Province, built after China’s reform and opening-up, is an important global hub for the transshipment of energy and bulk raw materials.
Recent technological innovations have upgraded the port into a modern port, serving as an important hub for the new Eurasian land bridge and a major hub for the New Silk Road initiative.
Rizhao Port merged with Qingdao Port, Yantai Port and Bohai Bay Port to form Shandong Port Group Co.Ltd five years ago. together. Last year, the total cargo handled by the four ports was over 1.7 billion tons, making it the first in the world.
As part of the first leg of his inspection tour in Shandong province from Wednesday to Friday, Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, visited the port, praised its achievements and called on the province to be a high-level platform for important international exchanges – and to create cooperation measures.
“Reforms are the driving force for development,” Xi said Thursday during a symposium in Jinan, capital of Shandong province, attended by business and academic representatives.
To further deepen reforms on all fronts, efforts should be focused on the overall goals of improving and developing the socialist system with Chinese characteristics and modernizing China’s governance system and capacity, he stressed.
Deepen reform with emphasis on Chinese modernization
Xi’s trip to Shandong is the first on-site inspection since an April 30 meeting of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, which decided that the third plenary session of the 20th CPC Central Committee will be held in Beijing in July. It should primarily deal with questions related to the further comprehensive deepening of China’s reforms and modernization.
Over the years, China has continuously improved the reform of its economic system and steadily advanced the reform of its political and cultural system, introducing innovations along the way.
Meanwhile, the reform of the ecological civilization system has been accelerated, and the reform of national defense and military has achieved historic breakthroughs.
The comprehensive deepening of reforms has placed greater emphasis on building the national governance system and governance capabilities. China has convened about 40 meetings of the Central Leadership Group for Comprehensive Deepening Reform and 30 meetings of the Central Commission for Comprehensive Deepening Reform to improve the design of reform at the highest level.
From implementing the Foreign Investment Law and establishing pilot free trade zones to hosting a series of major trade fairs and accelerating the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port, China is steadily deepening reforms and expanding high-level opening-up. This adds positive energy to global development and brings tangible benefits to people around the world.
At the symposium on Thursday, Xi said China should take decisive steps to remove the ideological and institutional obstacles that stand in the way of China’s modernization progress and step up efforts to resolve deep-rooted institutional challenges and structural problems.
Reform of the economic system should start by meeting realistic needs and addressing the most pressing problems, and it should promote theoretical and institutional innovations in solving practical problems, he added.
A better life for people
Xi emphasized that reforms should focus on what is important to people and what they expect as a priority. The goal is to give people a greater sense of fulfillment, he said.
China focuses on solving the practical problems that most deeply and directly affect people, and continues to push forward major reforms and system-building in the area of human livelihoods so that the results of reforms benefit all people equally and promote their comprehensive development .
The Civil Code, which had been awaited for decades, was finally adopted in 2020 and underlines the respect and protection of individual freedom, dignity, interests and rights.
Since the 18th CPC National Congress, the country has built a total of more than 59 million units of various types of affordable housing and renovated shanty towns, helping over 140 million people find new homes.
“The Chinese people’s pursuit of a better life is the goal we pursue. “The real purpose of pushing forward reforms and promoting development is to improve the living conditions of the people,” Xi said.
Xi emphasized the need to plan and advance reforms based on the general, fundamental and long-term interests of the people, and urged to identify key areas of reform and make breakthroughs based on the pressing concerns and hopes of the general public including employment, income growth, education, healthcare, housing, government services, child care, elder care, personal safety and property protection.
