“Orientation” on the liberalization of euthanasia in France

On May 26th at 12.30 p.m. on ORF 2

Vienna (OTS) Sandra Szabo presents “Orientation” on Sunday, May 26, 2024, at 12:30 p.m. on ORF 2 with the following topics:

Dying is allowed: Liberalization of euthanasia in France

France is facing one of its biggest social reforms in recent history. Active euthanasia could soon be permitted. The French parliament, the National Assembly, will vote on it on Monday. Hardly any topic has been discussed so emotionally in France for years. Seriously ill people who have caused a lot of media attention with their fate and who currently have to travel to Belgium or Switzerland to die have contributed to this. Cornelia Primosch met those affected and opponents of liberalization.

High price: child labor on cocoa plantations in Ghana

Austrians eat around eight kilograms of chocolate per capita every year. Recently, climate-related weather extremes such as floods and long periods of heat have severely affected the cocoa harvest worldwide and caused the price of cocoa to rise. The farming families who grow cocoa in countries like Ghana do not benefit from the rising prices. Many farmers live in poverty and are forced to let their children work on the farms in order to support their families. Konstantin Obermayr looked at the conditions of cocoa production in Ghana together with the Epiphany Campaign, the aid organization of the Catholic Youth Group. Austria imports 25 percent of its cocoa requirements from there.

Host instead of popcorn: church in the cinema

Comfortable cinema seats instead of hard pews, rhythmic music instead of organ sounds and a large cinema screen that is shown during the mass: “Church in the Cinema” is a special Roman Catholic service that takes place twice a month in the Schubert Cinema in Graz. The initiators want to present the Good News in a slightly different language and also appeal to people who are distant from the church. The unusual service actually attracts a surprising number of young people. Sandra Szabo was there on Whitsunday.

Against polarization: Ute Bock Prize for Imam and Rabbis

This year the Ute Bock Prize for civil courage goes to Imam Ramazan Demir and Rabbi Schlomo Hofmeister. Both have been campaigning for cross-religious respect and against anti-Semitism and racism for years, repeatedly in broadcasts from the ORF religion and ethics department. The award was given in particular to their commitment to schools, where they are carrying out educational work in view of the escalation of the Middle East conflict.
