Partnership on sustainability strategies between the Vienna Business Agency and the Chinese city of Shenzhen

Wien/Shenzhen (OTS) The delegation trip to various Chinese economic metropolises led by City Councilor for Economic Affairs Peter Hanke culminated this week in the signing of a declaration of intent between the Vienna Business Agency and the city of Shenzhen. This is intended to deepen the international exchange for companies and startups in the areas of green technologies, smart cities, digitalization and life sciences from both cities.

“Vienna is perceived worldwide as a green, livable and international metropolis with a highly lively and innovative corporate scene in the climate and environmental sector. The new collaboration with Shenzhen opens a floodgate to the distant future for the green technology projects of our Viennese companies and startups East and will intensify mutual relations and knowledge exchange”so Hanke.

“A closer partnership is the lever to bring the city of Shenzhen our best practice approaches in promoting projects to reduce CO2 and achieve climate neutrality.”said Gerhard Hirczi, Managing Director of the Vienna Business Agency. “Conversely, our local businesses can benefit from the enormous amount of innovation and growth here in this metropolitan region.”

The agreement was signed by Cao Saixian, Director General of the Shenzhen Foreign Office, and Peter Hanke, City Councilor for Economic Affairs, President of the Vienna Business Agency, in the presence of Wang Shourui, Vice Mayor of Shenzhen.

The memorandum of understanding concluded between Vienna and Shenzhen is the third agreement in the last eight months. Similar agreements have already been reached with Bangkok and Shanghai and underline the strong interest from the Asian region in Vienna as a business location.

Shenzhen has made a name for itself as both an engine for national growth and for its relatively high quality of life in China. The Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, founded in 1980, has developed into a motor of the Chinese economy and a magnet for international investors. With around 17 million inhabitants (2020), the metropolis is the third most populous city in China and, along with the neighboring cities of Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Macau, is part of the “Pearl River Delta” metropolitan region.
