More about the ORF III “zeit.geschichte” evening

The “zeit.geschichte” evening on February 10th begins with the ORF III new production “Battle for Austria – February 1934: Outbreak of Violence” (8:15 p.m.), which illuminates the dramatic days of the February fighting in 1934. The political conflict between the Christian Socialists and the Socialists resulted in a violent confrontation that claimed hundreds of lives and influenced the relationship between the ÖVP and SPÖ to this day. The documentary is dedicated to a chapter in contemporary Austrian history that has shaped politics and society like no other.

The two “zeit.geschichte” productions “Austria’s Road to the Chancellor’s Dictatorship” (9:05 p.m.) and “The Years of the Chancellor’s Dictatorship” (9:55 p.m.) then analyze how the First Republic of Austria emerged from a democracy that was characterized by profound conflicts between the two political camps, developed into a dictatorship. “Kurt Schuschnigg, Catholic, dictatorial, American” (10:45 p.m.), a film portrait of the Chancellor of the corporate state who was forced to resign by the National Socialists in 1938, concludes the themed evening.
