Josef-Matthias-Hauer-Platz in Josefstadt is being redesigned. In order to experience the wishes of the Josefstadt, a district -wide survey was carried out. The district head presented the results today, Tuesday, the results. A total of 21,221 district residents aged 16 and over were entitled to participate – “regardless of their citizenship”, as project manager Christian Glantschnigg from the Institute Foresight Research carried out when presenting the results. The survey was carried out from January 7 to February 21, 2025. 5,942 people took part in the survey – a return of around 28 percent. 75 percent spoke out for more trees and more green on Josef-Matthias-Hauer-Platz. 68 percent stated that they wanted more drinking wells, 64 percent spoke out for more seating. “The place is the largest project in the coming years,” said Josefstadt district manager Martin Fabisch. “So far there is a traffic junction where around 4,000 cars drive through every day.” Due to the redesign, the place should be “a meeting point for young and old”. The motto is: “Streets instead of hup concerts and green instead of gray,” said Fabisch. The Josefstadt district head regarded the result of the survey as a “clear mandate for redesign”. The Josef-Matthias-Hauer-Platz and Albertgasse as well as the Skodagasse are to be redesigned in 2026. A new two-way bike path and eight new trees are planned on the square and a centrally located fountain. The Albert and the Skodagasse should also be greened and new benches and a drinking fountain are to be obtained.
