Vienna (OTS) – With the redesign of Christian-Broda-Platz in the 6th district, the gate to Innere Mariahilfer Straße will be climate-friendly. The sealed surface and forest of red poles give way to 25 new trees, extensive green spaces and bright paving, transforming the square into a shady and cooled foyer of Vienna’s largest shopping street. Wide and structurally separated cycle paths at the intersection of the Belt and Mariahilfer Straße provide greater safety for cyclists, creating a comfortable connection between Mariahilf and Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus as well as the Belt Cycle Path. The first work on Christian-Broda-Platz began in March of this year. On Tuesday, July 2, 2024, the City of Vienna – Road Administration and Road Construction will begin building the cycling facilities.
Details
As part of the redesign of Christian-Broda-Platz, a safe cycling connection will be created between Inner and Outer Mariahilfer Straße. The work will take place in two construction phases.
In the first construction phase Structurally separated one-way cycle paths, at least two meters wide, will be built on both sides of the road on Inner Mariahilfer Straße between the Belt and Stumpergasse. Previously, only narrow multi-purpose lanes were marked for cycling in this area.
Traffic measures – first construction phase
In the section between Mariahilfer Belt and Stumpergasse, Innere Mariahilfer Straße will be a provisional one-way route towards the city center. Cycling traffic remains in both directions. On the Mariahilfer Belt, in the section from Bürgerspitalgasse to Mariahilfer Straße, one lane will be used for construction work.
In the second construction phase The new structurally separated cycle path will continue towards the city outwards across the middle zone between the belt lanes, where there was previously only a narrow multi-purpose lane. This creates a significantly improved connection from Mariahilf to Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus. There is already a wide cycle path towards the city center.
In the middle zone, one lane for motorized traffic will be eliminated – the space will be used for the new, wide cycle path and for a new green area with four standard bushes. The renovation work means that cycling and motorized traffic are better separated.
The City of Vienna – Road Administration and Road Construction will report separately on the traffic measures in the second construction phase.
