60 percent of the federal government’s primary care facilities shut down last year

With the massive decline in asylum applications by around 60 percent compared to the previous year, the number of federal basic care facilities for asylum seekers has also been reduced. While there were still 27 across Austria in autumn 2022, the number has been reduced by 60 percent to eleven, especially in the past twelve months: Traiskirchen, Schwechat, Ossiach, Villach, Finkenstein, Graz-Andritz, Kindberg, Bad Kreuzen, Thalham, Bergheim and Fieberbrunn. These are currently half occupied. Additional federal basic care facilities are to be shut down in the coming weeks.

Zwtl.: The fight against illegal migration and smuggling mafia will be consistently continued

“Austria has taken robust measures in the fight against illegal migration and the smuggling mafia and will continue to do so,” said Interior Minister Gerhard Karner. “As a result, asylum applications were massively reduced and thus the number of basic care facilities throughout Austria. We will consistently continue on this path.”

Currently: 1,514 people in basic care

There are currently 1,514 people receiving federal basic care. As of October 1, 2024, around 27,300 asylum seekers and those entitled to subsidiary protection are receiving basic care. For comparison: On October 1, 2018, 40,300 asylum seekers and those entitled to subsidiary protection were receiving basic care.
