Next weekend from the 5th/6th. The “Palestine Congress” will take place in Vienna in October.
Personalities from Palestinian civil society such as the former Knesset member Hanin Zoabi, the British expert on the Islamic resistance Azzem Tamimi and the Palestinian ambassador to Vienna Salah Abdel-Shafi are expected to speak. Numerous Jewish scientists and activists have also announced their presence: Andrew Feinstein, the South African-British anti-apartheid activist whose family survived the Nazi terror in hiding in Vienna; the board member of the “Jewish Voices for a Just Peace in the Middle East” Iris Hefets or the philosophy lecturer and BDS activist Stavit Sinai, who emigrated from Israel.
The question discussed at the congress: what consequences will the ever-increasing contradiction between the Western claim to lead the “free world” and at the same time make the atrocities of Israeli colonialism possible in the first place?
How can it be that criticism of colonialism is criminalized? How can freedom of expression, which is being attacked by the Austrian government, be defended?
Hanin Zoabi, who was still an active Knesset member at the time, had already been deprived of a hall near the city in Vienna five years ago. The then Green deputy mayor Birgit Hebein personally intervened against them and showed how Israeli apartheid works.
In this way, the Palestine Congress becomes a yardstick for the remaining basic democratic rights.
