30th Vienna Refugee Ball: Dance night against a fortress Europe

April 20, 2024 – Main live acts Duo Attwenger and Light in Babylon – City of Vienna awards Willi Resetarits Prize for the first time – message of hope and cohesion

Vienna (OTS) On April 20, 2024, the Integrationshaus invites you to the 30th Vienna Refugee Ball to celebrate a moving night of solidarity and togetherness. Under the motto “Dance night against a fortress Europe”, people from all over the world are gathering to show openness and solidarity with refugees and migrants. The net proceeds from the event go to the projects for refugees in the Integrationshaus. “For over 30 years, the Integrationshaus has stood for professional and humane standards in the care and support of refugees. With the ball we are sending a signal against political arbitrariness and showing that competence and respect for human rights are the keys to a society based on solidarity.” explain Susanne Lettner and Martin Wurzenrainer, managing directors of the Integrationshaus.

The Vienna Refugee Ball, which takes place in the unique ambience of the Vienna City Hall, has established itself as one of the most important ball events in Vienna. For three decades, the ball has united people from different backgrounds and cultures in a night full of dance, music and diversity. “This year’s 30th Vienna Refugee Ball marks not only an anniversary, but also an important milestone in the joint efforts for humanity and integration.”emphasizes Wurzenrainer. “At a time when the challenges facing refugees are becoming increasingly difficult, it is crucial that we come together and demonstrate our solidarity. The ball is not only a celebration, but also a message of hope and cohesion.”

Even after 30 years: musical world tour on two stages

The focus of the evening will once again be performances by international musicians who will take guests into a world of rhythmic diversity. Included are Pacheco, Sam Brisbe and Tinderbox, Klakradl, SAFAR and Halil Gürsü & Vienna Orient Project. The highlights that visitors can expect are the performances by the celebrated Austrian duo Attwenger and the band Light in Babylon, a musical fusion of ethnicities and cultures based on the musical traditions of the Eastern Mediterranean. “The musical diversity at the refugee ball is a sign of respect, solidarity and an open society. And so we want to celebrate together!”says ball organizer Nikolaus Heinelt.

Willi Resetarits Prize

In memory of the co-founder of the Integration House, Willi Resetarits, who died in 2022, the City of Vienna is donating a prize of the same name worth 10,000 euros, which will be presented for the first time at the 30th Refugee Ball. This honors musicians or bands with a commitment to civil society, i.e. personalities who, like Willi Resetarits, are particularly distinguished, in addition to their music, by their commitment to integration and togetherness in Vienna. A jury from the areas of music, civil society engagement and representatives of the City of Vienna select the prize winners from a list of nominees. The winners will appear at the 2025 Refugee Ball a year later.

30 years of the Vienna Refugee Ball

The Vienna Refugee Ball was first launched in 1995 by the then Integrationshaus chairman Willi Resetarits. Apart from the first ball in the Sophiensälen, it has since taken place in the Vienna City Hall. “The recipe for success of the Vienna Refugee Ball – a ball where everyone is welcome, with a top-class musical program and the aim of supporting the work of the Integration House,” Resetarits invited at the time.

The net proceeds from the 30th Vienna Refugee Ball will go to the projects for refugees in the Integration House. The help and support for those seeking protection goes far beyond simply providing accommodation for asylum seekers and refugees: intensive psychosocial care, psychological care for refugee children, independent legal advice and other projects are largely financed by donations and could be done without them this support will not be implemented.
