Today 30 years ago, on September 15, 1995, a chapter was opened in Tokyo, which is still unparalleled worldwide: the opening of the first body world exhibition in the Tokyo National Science Museum on the occasion of the 100th annual conference of the Japanese Anatomical Society.
What nobody suspected at the time: The start marked the beginning of an extraordinary success story. The invisible became visible with body worlds – millions of visitors received fascinating insights into the human body for the first time, as they had never been possible in this form before.
Since then, more than 57 million people have seen the exhibitions in over 170 cities and 42 countries. This makes body worlds one of the most successful and influential exhibition concepts in the world today.
With the invention of the plastination, Dr. Gunther von Hagens the foundation for this success. What was once reserved for doctors was experienced and understandable for all people through his technology. “From the beginning it was my concern to democratize the anatomy. I wanted to enable people to look into their innermost – not as a breach of taboo, but as an invitation to know, respect and responsibility towards my own body”explains Gunther von Hagens.
“Body worlds have changed the understanding of the human body sustainably and contributed to a new culture of education about health and life”adds curator Dr. Angelina Whalley, who has shaped the content concept of the exhibitions since the beginning.
The fact that body worlds lost none of their topicality three decades after their premiere is due to their universal topic: man! At a time of fast pace, digital stimuli and constant change, the exhibition offers a rare moment of pause and reflection. The sometimes violent criticism at the beginning – which ignited exclusively in Germany – has not changed anything. Today, body worlds create direct access to your own body, promote health awareness and encourage you to take responsibility for your own life.
This connection from scientific education, personal relevance and emotional address makes the exhibition timeless – and meaningful for every generation.
30 years of body worlds – a feast of life that moves, inspires, inspired and changed.
