2nd Austrian Safe Sport Conference

2nd Austrian Safe Sport Conference

100% SPORT takes a look at male victims of violence in sports and awards the Austrian Safe Sport Award to Ombudsman Oliver Egger and the Football for All Association

Vienna (OTS) 100% SPORT the Austrian center for gender competence and safe sport invited people to the 2nd Austrian Safe Sport Conference on Thursday in the premises of the ethics site “IRIS” (Institutions for Respect and Integrity in Sport). Michael Cepic, Managing Director of NADA Austria, gave greetings to the participants as site coordinator. Dieter Brosz, head of Department II/1 of the BMKÖS, underlined the relevance of taking a differentiated approach and taking consistent action in the event of violence and conveyed greetings from the Sports Minister and Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler.

With the conference theme „EmpowerMENt“– Experiences of violence from a gender perspective 100% SPORT wanted to draw attention to the challenges faced by male victims of violence in sport and raise awareness of the need for gender-sensitive support services.

Stereotypes and clichés as a hurdle when seeking help

Stereotypical role models and the cliché of the stronger sex often make it difficult for male sufferers to confide in someone. The vera*Sport trust, which was set up at 100% SPORT in 2022, offers support for those affected by violence in organized sports, regardless of gender. We hope that with our conference offerings, training courses and free consultations we can provide the best possible support to those affected – and those who work for them“, says 100% SPORT President Christa Prets.

In 2024, 33 cases have already been processed. The statistics from the trust reflect the picture described by experts at the conference:

Rosa Diketmüller, assistant professor and lecturer at the University of Vienna and head of the CASES study Austria: “The good news: Sport is no more dangerous than other areas of society and is predominantly experienced as something positive. However, male adolescents are more frequently affected by all forms of violence (mental, physical, sexualized violence with physical contact) than female adolescents. The exception is sexualized attacks without physical contact (inappropriate jokes, sexist language, etc.).

Hubert Steger, clinical psychologist and head of work with those affected and process support at men’s counseling: “The conference was able to resolve many question marks from the perspective of victim advocates and shed light on a dark area, which is very important when working with those affected in sport.

Award for outstanding commitment to Safe Sport

100% SPORT Managing Director Claudia Koller: “The SAFE SPORT Award is an award that was presented for the first time as part of the 2nd Austrian Safe Sport Conference.
100% SPORT would like to honor the commitment to respect and safety in sport, underline the potential of sport as an environment that promotes personality and health and, in this context, emphasize the pioneering importance of Safe Sport in Austria. In the future, the prize will be awarded annually to individuals and/or organizations who demonstrate a particular commitment to respect, protection and a safe sporting environment.

The winners of the Safe Sport Awards 2024 are Oliver Egger, ombudsman for LGBTIQ people in football and the Football for All association (www. Fußballfueralle.at). 100% SPORT President Prets and department head Brosz presented the award winners. Nikola Staritz accepted the award as a club representative.
