For the new educators in the Viennese school system, an information brochure was created again this year, in which the most important thing around the entry is collected: from service law to decrees to school autonomy. Focus on reading skills – 1,400 Viennese readers
Reading is the basis for learning and promotes imagination. In addition, it is an important prerequisite for media literacy and social participation.
For more than ten years, the volunteers Viennese readers have been visiting elementary schools and middle schools and supporting young people in small groups in reading. The children get direct feedback, praise and recognition and look forward to reading together every week.
Digitization
With digital collaborations such as the interactive video series “Cody21” for elementary schools, the existing knowledge of the children is tied. The aim is to promote critical thinking and strengthen media literacy so that children can use new technologies responsibly.
Focus on financial education
Financial competence is an important basis for a self -determined life. In cooperation with the Vienna debt counseling and the Chamber of Labor, young people can get the financial driver’s license. This gives you orientation for questions about online shopping and installment payments and develop a responsible handling of money.
Focus on democracy education
Political education has long been part of everyday school life. The European Bilding Directorate for Vienna accompanies this process with discussion formats such as the “EU Brunches” and a specially developed guide for students.
Day of the Viennese schools on October 8, 2025
On the day of the Vienna schools, more than 700 schools in Vienna are open to visitors, which will take place for the fifteenth this year. “The day of the Viennese schools offers the excellent opportunity to get a personal picture and all future students, parents, grandparents and everyone who is interested in the Viennese schools are welcome,” says Education Director Elisabeth Fuchs. All schools in Vienna can be attended during the lesson.
Many schools also use the day as a “open house” and present their focus and activities. Together with their students, the teachers are happy to tell about their school in personal conversations and to answer questions.
