2.3 million working hours daily by Austria’s NPOs and their volunteers

Statistics Austria’s NPO satellite account provides a comprehensive insight into the economic performance of non-profit organizations for the first time.

Vienna (OTS) Whether in the social and health sectors, animal and climate protection or the promotion of education, sport and culture, Austria’s non-profit organizations and their volunteers are an indispensable support of society. In order to be able to adequately record their performance, Statistics Austria has set up a satellite account for the non-profit sector on behalf of the Ministry of Social Affairs, which makes economic data and figures accessible to the third sector for the first time. The results presented today for the reporting years 2018-2021 underline the key role of the non-profit sector in society as a whole:
3.8 million voluntarily committed people in this country work 470 million unpaid hours of work per year. Employees in non-profit institutions also provide around 370 million paid working hours. According to the report, this results in a total added value of 22 billion euros for Austria. As employers, clubs and organizations are responsible for almost 6% of all employment relationships in the country.

These impressive figures once again underline how comprehensive the services of the third sector and the commitment of Austria’s volunteers are to the well-being of all of us. The NPO satellite account is an important step in the scientific analysis of charitable work and will undoubtedly contribute to greater political and public appreciation
is Ruth Williams, Managing Director of the Fundraising Association Austriaconvinces and points to the future inspiring effect of the non-profit reform: The Non-Profit Reform Act has been in force since the beginning of 2024, and has also brought groundbreaking improvements to volunteer work. Volunteer centers in every federal state, the introduction of the state prize for voluntary commitment, the legal protection of social, environmental, peace and memorial services abroad and, last but not least, the significant increase in the volunteer allowance – volunteer organizations and their volunteers benefit directly and sustainably from this!
