Vienna (OTS) – On Tuesday, July 16, 2024, the City of Vienna – Road Administration and Road Construction will begin the construction of a structurally separate two-way cycle path on Heiligenstädter Straße in the section between Gallmeyergasse and Josef-Hindels-Gasse. As part of the construction work, the green areas will be expanded and four additional trees will be planted.
Details
With a new and comfortable two-way cycle path over a length of around 400 meters, cycling on Heiligenstädter Straße will be safer and more convenient in the future. The cycle path is created along the side of the street facing the city between Gallmeyergasse and Josef-Hindels-Gasse and runs between green spaces and the sidewalk and is therefore clearly separated from motorized traffic. There are colored markings for even more safety. At the points where pedestrians cross the cycle path, it is marked with green paint to ensure more attention at the crossing points. There are red markings at house entrances to increase driver awareness. Raising the road and extending sidewalks increases safety for pedestrians.
The large, old trees on Heiligenstädter Straße will be preserved as important sources of shade. They will soon find better growing conditions. The construction work for the new cycle path will be used to enlarge the green strips with trees on the side of the city and to install automatic irrigation. Two additional green areas with a total of four trees will be built from scratch. This creates around 500 square meters of additional green space in which rainwater can seep away. This relieves pressure on the sewer system, improves the water balance of the vegetation and contributes to a more pleasant microclimate in the warm season.
Traffic measures
The construction work will take place during the day while keeping one lane open in each direction. In order to raise the road and extend the sidewalk, the streets Klabundgasse and Püchlgasse will become dead ends for a period of two weeks each. In the intersection areas with Klabundgasse and Josef-Hindels-Gasse, night work will be carried out for a maximum of two weeks.
