The Mirno more peace fleet is the world’s largest sailing project for socially or economically disadvantaged children and adolescents. Once a year, 100 ships with 1,000 people are on board in Croatia, this year from 13th to 20th September. The participants spend an adventure educational fleet week in which they experience the values of integration, inclusion and solidarity alive. The aim is to overcome exclusion and throw prejudices overboard. In over 30 years of existence, around 13,000 people have already been made possible.
Children and adolescents from around 30 nations come together, among other things war orphans, children with escape experience and people with disabilities, physical, social, mental or other special needs. During the fleet week, behavioral and thought patterns that were created by the disadvantages are broken up and re-sorted. Life on the ship – from cooking together to maneuvers such as sailing – everything makes the importance of cohesion significantly noticeable. In addition, the encouragement of different nationalities, languages, people with or without disabilities and the individual life stories show the need for mutual tolerance. Self -efficacy is activated by the inclusive and integrative design and turns into self -confidence – this is how young people learn to trust others and themselves.
“We have grown into a sustainable platform for a variety of target groups and social concerns. Anyone else is at the center of our focus. The fleet week makes the children forget the worries and problems of their everyday life for a time. They make friendships over all supposed differences. It is touching every year what the week causes the children to take new courage to take home”
so Andreas BauerCEO of the Friedensflott Mirno more association.
Croatia 30 years ago
In 1994 the project started with three ships and a handful of volunteers to bring together refugee young people from the former areas of Yugoslavia and to promote peaceful use of each other. After more than 30 years of peace fleet Mirno More, the topic of peace has not lost importance, on the contrary. In 2025 we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the end of the war in the countries of Croatia as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina – but a look at other countries in the world draws a completely different, cruel picture. Especially for disadvantaged young people, it is relevant to deal intensively with equal opportunities and peaceful coexistence and to anchor these values.
International participation and support
Participating ships are available from numerous organizations and providers as well as Croatian-Bosnian-Serbian, Slovenian, Slovak, Ukrainian and German partner associations. Children and adolescents from MA 11 child and youth welfare of the city of Vienna, from SOS Children’s villages or from Caritas are involved. In addition to the participants, there are also skipper, educators, interpreters and accompanying persons as well as an organizational and safety team. The association consists exclusively of volunteers and is fully supported by financial as well as material and service donations from the estimated sponsors and partners.
Star trip with adventure education
The Mirno More peace fleet sails in the Croatian Adriatic in Dalmatia. All ships start in the respective home on Saturday – from Poreč to Split. Everyone will come together in Rogoznica on Sunday. On Monday there is a puzzle sailing rally near Trogir, where navigated to nautical points on the water. On Tuesday, a beach picnic and sunset are waiting in the Bay of Kaštela, where the entire fleet remains for two nights. On Wednesday there are numerous activities for all ages. For many, the peace festival in the evening, for which the children and young people themselves prepare for the stage, is the highlight of the week. The formation trip coordinated via Funk on Thursday, in which all 100 ships in the Bay of Split set the sails in the sign of peace at the same time, ensures a moving conclusion of the time together. By Friday evening, all ships sail in their home afits and on Saturday the participants travel back home – with valuable impressions in the head and beautiful memories in the heart.
