10 years of city tour of Vienna’s Jewish history as part of the BMB-Vienna campaign

The tour of the Jewish population in Vienna “has been commemorated by the OEAD program since 2015: AT fixer Part of the offer of the Vienna campaign of the Federal Ministry of Education (BMB). During the city tour, young people are brought closer to the history of the Jewish population of Vienna and their displacement in National Socialism. Every year, more than 1,500 students from all over Austria take part. Since the beginning, over 11,000 young people from all federal states have researched the Jewish history of Vienna as well as the causes and consequences of the Holocaust in Leopoldstadt.

On the occasion of the anniversary, the Ministry of Education invited to an appointment and city tour on September 16, 2025 together with the OEAD and HTBLVA Anichstraße from Innsbruck.

Education Minister Christoph Return: “Offers like this are essential components of the Austrian culture of remembrance. As an extra -curricular place of learning, it offers young people a low -threshold and immediate access to the Jewish history of Vienna and promotes sensitization against anti -Semitism, exclusion of dissenting and discrimination of all kinds, which can be decided for every society and therefore decided.”

The two -hour tour – together with BMB section Doris Wagner – leads through the 2nd district to places that stand for Jewish life before 1938, as well as for exclusion, persecution and murder during the Nazi era. The intermediate team of the OEAD program is actively included: at the pupils: based on photographs and memories of Holocaust survivors, the young people link concrete places with life stories and historical events. In addition to transfer of knowledge, it is about perceiving and researching historical traces in your own environment. Today’s Jewish life in Vienna is also discussed.

“With the tour of the 2nd district, we want to show students where and how the victims of National Socialism are reminded and what traces of history can be found to this day. The commemorative signs remind us of where anti -Semitism and extremism can lead and how important it is to work for democracy and human rights,” emphasizes Jakob Calice, managing director of OEAD.

On the occasion of the 1945-2025 commemoration year, the Ministry of Education and OEAD celebrate the tenth of this successful cooperation. In 2025, the end of the Second World War, the liberation from National Socialism and the re -establishment of a democratic Austria for the 80th time. Remind the OEAD program: At the annual focus, AT is devoted to the topic “End of the war. Liberation. New start?”. The city tour is part of this initiative.
